Safe escape for the pilot and minimum damage to the aircraft
For arresting fighters without tailhook, a net barrier is installed in the overrun area. The net covers the width of the overrun area and is kept in place by two stanchions installed on each side of the runway. During an engagement, the net envelopes the aircraft, releases from the stanchions, and distributes the braking force generated by the connected energy absorbers. The net barrier system is referred to as BAK-15 by the USAF.
